With speculations ranging from China suppressing information about the outbreak to the virus being an engineered biological weapon, are there any legal grounds under international law to hold China responsible? Out of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC), under whose jurisdiction would the case be contended? Is the failure to comply with the International Health Regulations (IHR) sufficiently causally connected to the financial and human damage caused to nations worldwide? What are the class action lawsuits filed in the US to seek damages from China, and what would filing such a claim mean for the future development of international law? What are some measures that multilateral organisations can take to be better prepared for such cases moving forward?
