Dame Maureen Lipman has criticised the decision to cast Dame Helen Mirren as the former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in the film Golda because she is not Jewish.

In the latest row over the casting of non-Jews in Jewish roles — a practice described by critics as “Jewface” — Lipman said that she was uncomfortable with Mirren being given the film’s titular role.

Political activist and actor Laurence Fox says "it's an actor's job is to act, so it doesn't matter their background is. Wokeness is overtaking everything, even drama which is used to escape reality."
