Описание к видео Webinar: A Systematic Approach to Analyzing Visual and Textual Data

In this interactive presentation, Nicole will present a framework she calls “Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis,” developed to provide a way for qualitative researchers to analyse photographs or other visual data in combination with interviews and captions.

After a brief outline of the problem that researchers encounter when analyzing combined data from interviews along with photographs, artefacts, collages, maps or drawings, Nicole will present the framework she has developed (and published on) to address this challenge. In breakout rooms, participants will apply their learning to an example from Nicole’s research and discuss the framework’s benefits and challenges. In closing, Nicole will present on the framework’s theoretical and philosophical foundations and outline key considerations for "good" Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis.

Laura Lorenz learned about Nicole’s work at The Qualitative Report annual conference in January 2021.

Nicole Brown, PhD, is a Lecturer in Education at UCL Institute of Education and Director of Social Research & Practice and Education Ltd. Nicole gained her PhD in Sociology at the University of Kent for her research into the construction of academic identity under the influence of fibromyalgia. She has edited Lived Experiences of Ableism in Academia: Strategies for Inclusion in Higher Education for Policy Press and Ableism in Academia: Theorising Experiences of Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses in Higher Education for UCL Press, co-authored Embodied Inquiry: Research Methods for Bloomsbury, and is currently authoring How to Make the Most of Your Research Journal for Policy Press.

Nicole’s research interests relate to physical and material representations and metaphors, the generation of knowledge and, more generally, research methods and approaches to explore identity and body work, as well as to advance learning and teaching within higher education.
