ONCE MY MOTHER - SOPHIA TURKIEWICZ

When filmmaker Sophia Turkiewicz was seven her Polish mother put her in an Adelaide orphanage for two years. This lead to a deeply held resentment that lasted a long time, though - luckily - not a life time.

Ever-mindful of their strained relationship, Turkiewicz began exploring her mother's perilous, often tragic backstory on film.

In the mid-1970s she began making a documentary that was never completed. While at film school she made the short film Letters From Poland (1978), then in 1984, made the acclaimed drama Silver City, a fictitious story of post-war migrants in Australia.

Now, with Once My Mother, Turkiewicz feels at long last she has the story of her mother down properly, warts and all.

For the film is not only an exploration and appreciation of what her late mother went through, it is a re-examination of her own chequered feelings towards her.

In this often frank interview, Turkiewicz discusses the impulse behind making the film, her shifting attitude towards her mother, the need for absolute honesty and why the film could be seen as an act of penance.
