Engine oil is used for several purposes: to reduce friction in your engine, which reduces power losses and increase efficiency, to reduce wear by limiting metal on metal contact, and to remove contaminants from your engine. The engine oil starts in the engine sump, or oil pan, where it is sucked up through the pick-up tube to the oil pump, which then sends the oil through the oil filter. After passing through the filter, it travels to the various engine systems, including the crankshaft, pistons, and valvetrain. It then channels to oil return passages, where it begins the cycle again after dumping into the oil pan.
