JALAKANDESWARAR TEMPLE, VELLORE.

Vellore Fort was built during 16th century CE. by Channa Bommi Nayaka and Thimma Reddy Nayaka, the Chieftains under the Vijayanagara ruler Sadashiva Raya.

This granite fort , is an excellent example of military architecture and is known for its grand ramparts and has withstood several attacks.

Jalakandeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva , located inside the Vellore Fort at the centre of Vellore city, Tamil Nadu , India.

The temple was built during the reign of Vijayanagara dynasty King Sadasivadeva Maharaya (1540–1572 CE)

According to puranas, Athri muni installed a Siva Linga and worshiped. After he left the Siva Linga in the temple was covered by an ant-hill , surrounded with Rain waters in the lower levels.

The controller of the fort, Chinna Bommi Nayaka a Vijayanagara chieftain, who had a dream ,where Lord Shiva asked him to build a temple.

Nayaka built this temple in 1550 CE .and was known as Jalakandeswarar , as the temple was surrounded by Jalam or water.

Shree Akhilandeshwari Amma, the consort of Jalakandeswarar is also worshipped inside the premises.

The entrance of Jalakandeswarar Temple is built with a long Gopuram. We can see, exquisite carvings on it.
The main shrine faces east, and both the gopura dwaras face south.

This large wooden gates are sculptured with beautiful metal lotus flowers.

The kalyana mandapa , located on the western side of the temple is a wonderful structure reflecting the finer aspects of the glorious Vijayanagara temple architecture.

Highly sculptured and adorned pillars at the main entrance, and the representations of symbolic animals can be seen here.

There are 48 pillars each pillars are unique one may also observe detailed sculptures dedicated to Hindu deities

Magnificent representation of life-like statues on the pillars made of rock that have been fashioned as dragons, lions and horses. We can see the mix of both Shaivate and Vaishnaavate sculptures here.

Vijayanagara temples are usually surrounded by a strong enclosure.

The exquisite kalyana mandapa and the vasantha mandapa were built during the reign of Vijayanagara King Sadasivadeva Maharaya

Entering in to main temple through the second gopura a Vinayaga temple can be seen

To visit this site is a delight ,to those who appreciate authentic art.

This temple is maintained ,and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
