They serve as the primary channel through which you connect high speed devices to you computer such as a Graphics Card or a WiFi Network adapter.

Unfortunately the amount of PCIe lanes you have on your system are limited. In this video I talk comprehensively about how to figure out how many PCIe lanes you have on your PC.
