On New Year’s Day 1919, the HMY Iolaire sank just yards from the shores of the Isle of Lewis claiming the lives of over 200 men who had survived the horrors of World War I, only to perish within sight of home.

This haunting maritime disaster remains one of the worst in British history yet few outside Scotland have ever heard of it. In this video, we explore what went wrong, the stories of those who were lost and saved, and why this tragedy still echoes through the Western Isles more than a century later.
