Gloriette - The OPPOSITE Oubliette!

Описание к видео Gloriette - The OPPOSITE Oubliette!

In previous videos on our other channel, 'TheUntoldPast,' we have looked at the Oubliette, a horrific torture chamber and dungeon that existed within some medieval castles. However many castles also have something called a 'Gloriette.' Although these two words may sound similar, they could not be further away from each other in what they were used for, and what one could expect if they went into a Gloriette.

A Gloriette was an opulent and beautiful building created inside Medieval Castles for being where Kings and Queens would stay if they were travelling around the country. It's likely that the walls of the Gloriette would be lined with beautiful tapestries, showing the wealth of the monarchy and entertainment and banquets were found here. Also it's where court would attend to the King, and at Corfe Castle one of England's most famous is King John's Gloriette which today is ruined. Many Gloriettes exist still around Europe.

So compared to the oubliette, the Gloriette was where you would rub shoulders with the King and Queen, and the aristocracy at parties. But inside of the Oubliette, you would rub shoulders with the rats and other horrific things introduced to make your torture worse.

So join us as we look at, 'Gloriette - The OPPOSITE Oubliette!'
