Cartoons Underground is SEA first and largest independent animation festival.

In 2020, we pivoted our festival and went online with a week's programme featuring 17 films from several different countries, including two international programmes, and one Singapore Student Programme. We also featured the best of NYFA (National Youth Film Awards) and hosted an interactive Q&A with the directors themselves!

We had an online live panel discussion around Monetizing in Animation with internationally acclaimed directors like Kyle Balda (Director of Minions, Despicable Me 2 &3) and Patrick Smith (Award-winning Director, Director of MTV Daria) which you can watch on our channel.

During the festival, we hosted an in-person Story Development Animation Workshop lab for several young budding directors who were mentored by the Zhuang Brothers, and Jerrold Chong (Finding Pictures), and learned from Sean Buckelew's Masterclass. They went on to pitch their animated stories to a panel of judges from leading studios. The winner of the workshop has gone on to produce their film and received a grant from IMDA to fund their project.
