Oromo is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, primarily spoken by the Oromo people in Ethiopia's Oromia state and Northern Kenya. It serves as a lingua franca in these regions. With over 41.7 million native speakers, Oromo is the most spoken native language in Ethiopia, constituting 33.8% of the population, and the second most widely spoken language overall after Amharic.

Somali is an Afroasiatic language in the Cushitic branch, spoken by Somalis in Greater Somalia and the Somali diaspora. It is an official language in Somalia and Ethiopia, and a national language in Djibouti and northeastern Kenya. Somali is the best-documented Cushitic language, with studies dating back to the late 19th century. There are about 24 million Somali speakers, with around 17 million in Somalia, where it is spoken by 95% of the population.
