The common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) is a small wader. Her you can Listen to the Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) - early summer song (call).

If you have been out watching waders on a calm day in late summer chances are you have heard the call of the common sandpiper. This beautiful bird can be heard early summer along this river where I filmed it.


L 18 - 20 1/2 cm
Wingspan 32-35 cm

Lifespan approx. 6.8 years

Nests next to open water in forests, preferably with stony, gravely beaches close to rivers as here, or close to lakes into the forest.

In Norway the Common Sandpiper is only a summer guest from May to August. From August it start migrating to Africa individually or in small flocks.

With decreasing population trend the species have been in decline for many years - but the overall population is still stable.
