The internet was invented by numerous computer scientists and engineers working together to create a global network of interconnected computers. The first network, ARPANET, was developed by the US Department of Defense in 1969. The invention of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) allowed these networks to connect and gave birth to the internet. In the early 1970s, the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA) developed the concept of packet switching. British computer scientist Timothy Berners-Lee then developed an interface using HTTP, HTML, and URLs that enabled the creation of web browsers and the World Wide Web. US President Bill Clinton then promoted the growth of the internet through legislation. Today, the internet is used for communication, research, retail, propaganda, espionage, shopping, dating, and entertainment.
