What was once a thriving gold rush town is now a near-ghost town, marked by fading buildings, quiet streets, and remnants of what used to be. As I drive through the familiar roads and walk among the landmarks of my youth, I’m struck by both nostalgia and sadness, the beauty and the loss that coexist in a place you once called home.

Back in the 1930s, Red Lake was booming with gold mining activity. In the winter of 1936, its ice runway on Howey Bay was the busiest airstrip in the world, built directly over the frozen lake. It was a hub of adventure, survival, and ambition. Today, only floatplanes and bush pilots occupy the skies, carrying fishermen and supplies across the wilderness.

Red Lake proudly claims the title “Norseman Capital of the World.” I visit a park where a Norseman bush plane now sits enshrined, a tribute to the aviation history that once made this town thrive. These planes carried supplies to the surrounding mining camps in the harshest conditions.

Walking through Red Lake Cemetery, I recognize so many last names: the parents of childhood friends, the woman who ran the bowling alley, and others who shaped my early life. Though I have no family here anymore, this land still remembers me and in return, I honor it.

I return to Russet Lake, where I used to swim in summer and trudge across the ice in winter, singing Phantom of the Opera to the frozen silence. I dive into its waters once again, as if making an offering to the land, to the past, to who I once was.
