Lagos, Nigeria — In an exclusive interview with MJMedia, Dr. Anita Nana-Okuribido, a prominent advocate for sustainable development, emphasized the need to activate the mandates of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 17, which champions partnerships for sustainable community growth. Speaking passionately in Lagos, she called on government agencies, corporate organizations, civil societies, and NGOs to join forces to ensure that development benefits reach Nigeria’s grassroots communities.
According to Dr. Nana-Okuribido, collaboration is essential to achieve impactful green initiatives. She urged corporate organizations to commit at least 30% of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budgets to green projects, while government agencies should allocate a similar percentage of constituency projects to green energy technologies.
"Everyone, even the president of a country, comes from a basic community," she noted. "Let’s come back to the basics, form community-based organizations, and understand local needs by working with community leaders, women, youth, and people with disabilities."
Dr. Nana-Okuribido envisions transformative changes across various sectors powered by green technology. In agriculture, she believes that sustainable practices using green devices could enhance food security and empower local farmers. For healthcare, she proposed solar-powered rural clinics with renewable energy solutions for medical refrigeration and housing for healthcare workers, making rural postings more attractive to professionals. Education would also benefit through the provision of solar reading lamps and solar-powered computer labs with internet connectivity, helping rural students access modern educational resources and bridge learning gaps with urban counterparts.
In coastal areas, where fishing is a primary livelihood, Dr. Nana-Okuribido recommended solar-powered facilities for fish preservation, creating sustainable business hubs for fishermen and fostering economic growth. Finally, she highlighted the importance of solar water sanitation systems in schools and markets to improve public health and hygiene in rural areas.
Dr. Nana-Okuribido emphasized that achieving sustainable development at the grassroots requires collaboration. “To foster real and lasting development, all stakeholders must pool resources and ideas,” she stated,
reinforcing the need for Nigeria to serve as a model for integrating green initiatives that empower rural communities.
