Splints prevent the tooth from moving or shifting, which is crucial for healing and proper function.

By stabilizing the tooth, splints can reduce or eliminate pain caused by tooth movement.
Improved Healing:
A stable tooth allows for better healing of the surrounding tissues, such as the periodontal ligaments and gums.
Protection:
Splints can protect the tooth from further injury during healing or while the underlying cause of the tooth mobility is addressed.

Types of Splints:
Periodontal Splints:
These are commonly used to support teeth that are loose due to gum disease or other periodontal issues.
Traumatic Splints:
These are used to stabilize teeth that have been injured, such as after a tooth fracture or avulsion (removal).
1) Intracoronal Splints:
These involve placing a splint inside the tooth structure, often used in conjunction with a crown.
2) Extracoronal Splints:
These are placed on the outside of the tooth, often using composite materials or wires.
Materials Used:
Composite Resins:
These are tooth-colored materials that can be bonded to the teeth to create a splint.
Wires:
Metal wires can be used to create a splint, often incorporated into the composite material.
Glass Fibers:
These are used in some splints to provide strength and flexibility.
Ceramic Materials:
These can be used for more permanent splints, especially in the anterior (front) teeth.
Procedure:
1. Assessment:
The dentist will assess the degree of tooth mobility and the underlying cause.
2. Preparation:
The teeth to be splinted are prepared, which may involve cleaning the surfaces and preparing them for bonding.
3. Splint Application:
The chosen material is applied to the teeth and bonded in place.
4. Follow-Up:
Regular follow-up appointments are needed to ensure the splint is functioning properly and to monitor healing.
