Описание к видео What would a showgirl wear in 1889??

This is an 1880s fancy dress costume, made for an event themed around Moulin Rouge Showgirls (1880-1901).

I wanted to create a star-themed look, and I may have been a little influenced by Phantom of the Opera because the more I worked on it, the more stars I wanted to add. You’re absolutely allowed to have opinions on this costume; I’m not here to police comments. But just a gentle reminder I’m the one reading them, and I still believe I deserve kindness.

Yes! Showgirl costumes from the Moulin Rouge in 1889 reflected the extravagant, theatrical, and slightly risqué style of Belle Époque Paris. The venue had just opened that year and quickly became famous for its lively can-can performances and lavish stage productions. So what did an 1880s Moulin Rouge costume look like??

Layered skirts worn by Can-can dancers were usually made with the intention to showcase the high-kicks of the dancers with multiple layers of ruffles, often trimmed with lace. These skirts were typically knee-length or slightly longer but were designed to be lifted and twirled during performances.

The Moulin Rouge opened in 1889 so the Bustle Influence was still present. Though shorter than evening gowns of the time, some showgirl costumes still incorporated elements of the bustle silhouette, with fabric gathered or draped at the back to create volume. Bodices had lower than normal necklines. From looking at extant photos it seemed many costumes had off-the-shoulder or low-cut bodices and were often decorated with fringe, beads, or lace to add movement and sparkle under the stage lights.
