STORYLINE
A Russian bridge-building battalion started rebuilding a metal bridge across the Hasbani River near the Lebanese-Israeli border on Tuesday.
The bridge was destroyed during the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon during the July/August war.
The Russian sappers inspected the left bank of the river while engineers started building an intermediate support.
The bridge is located near the village of Ain Arab and not far from Ghajar where Israel is still occupying Lebanese territory.
Israeli forces pulled out of south Lebanon last week, in line with the U.N. resolution.
But the Israelis kept control of the Lebanese side of the divided border village
of Ghajar. Discussions have since focused over returning that piece of land to Lebanon.
Another company of Russian bridge builders will also work at a facility in Damour, 18 kilometres south of Beirut to restore a bridge across the Jun River that flows into the Mediterranean.
