Decarlos Brown Jr. has been charged with the murder of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee. The fatal stabbing occurred on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 22, 2025.

The attack: Surveillance video from the Charlotte Area Transit System showed Zarutska and Brown on the train. Without any apparent interaction, Brown got up from his seat behind her and stabbed her in the neck with a folding knife. Zarutska collapsed and died at the scene.

The suspect: Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, was arrested shortly after exiting the train. His history includes multiple prior arrests and a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Motive: Brown reportedly told his sister that he killed Zarutska because he believed she could read his mind. He has a documented history of mental health issues and delusional behavior.
