Hayo Boerema composed the three-piece Mutations on the request of Joram en Iddo in a period that mutations caused both lockdown as opened up new ways. In the three movements, composition and improvisation go hand in hand, while the trombone player moves through the space of the church.

The first and third movement consist of sections with their specific series of tones (modes). The musicians determine themselves when they move from one section to the next and improvise on basis of the given modes. In the middle movement, tones and intervals mutate through glissando’s, trombone mutes and organ colors, resulting in a soundscape in which the sound of organ and trombone merge into each other. The final, toccata like movement ends with a brief coda of great contrast between the two instruments.

Hayo Boerema componeerde Mutations op verzoek van Joram en Iddo in een tijd dat mutaties voor afsluiting (lockdown) zorgen en tegelijkertijd nieuwe wegen openen. In de drie delen gaan compositie en improvisatie samen, terwijl de trombonist zich verplaatst door de ruimte van de kerk.

Het eerste en derde deel bestaat uit secties met hun eigen voorraad aan tonen (modi). De musici bepalen ter plekke de voortgang en improviseren op basis van de aangereikte toonvoorraad. In het middendeel muteren tonen en intervallen door glissandi, trombone dempers (mute) en orgelkleuren tot een geluidslandschap waarin het geluid van trombone en orgel in elkaar overloopt. Het finale, toccata-achtige deel eindigt met een kort coda met groot contrast tussen de twee instrumenten.
