Flamenco is iconic for loud and vigorous footwork that, when done well, can be incredibly compelling. There are many sounds that you can make with your feet in flamenco, in this video we will cover only three. These are the three most common foot sounds in flamenco.

The First one a Stomp or Golpe in Spanish
In this one you stand with feet hip width apart and lift your foot backwards aiming to hit the floor with the entire bottom part of your foot. The idea is to lift the foot backwards and then let it drop to the floor like a hammer. Do not to use excessive force because that way you might hurt your feet, but rather to let the natural force of your foot dropping to the floor create the sound.

The second one is Dig or Planta in Spanish
This one is very similar to the stomp except that you aim to hit the floor with the ball of your feet and not the heel. You start the same way as with the stomp by lifting your foot backwards and then letting the ball of your foot to drop hitting the floor.

The third is Heal or Tacon in Spanish
You raise the heal on one of your feet, placing pressure on the ball of that foot, then forcefully dropping the heal into the floor to create a sound.

These three sounds can be combined together to create music with your feet. There are endless combinations and patterns that you can put together using just these three sounds. Whenever learning new footwork, I do it super super slow. Doing things slow is an important aspect to the way I train. Because it ensures that I am doing the exercise correctly. Once I am completely comfortable with the exercise I practice doing a little faster and then a little faster until I am able to do it at the required speed. Whenever I start making mistakes I immediately go back to practicing at a lower speed. My objective being that I can do my footwork intuitively -- without having to think about. Which can create the quality of the dancing that makes difficult things look effortless, as if it easy. That is my objective when practicing any footwork.
