Bucharest, Romania has a bad rap - and if there's one city that doesn't deserve being typecast, this one is it. Long considered one of Europe's most uninspiring, boring, and drab cities (and indeed this might have been true during the Ceausescu era), modern Bucharest is a city of multiple faces, with beauty found around every corner. This is not a city that you want to brush aside as an afterthought - dig beneath its imposing surface, and you'll find a city that you'll not only enjoy, but come to adore.

Bucharest offers a wide array of architectural styles, each representing a chapter from its sordid history. Being constantly juggled from empire to empire, then tossed into a Cold War-era communist dictatorship under Ceausescu (one of the most brutal autocrats of his era), Romania has experienced life under many rulers. The legacies of its past rulers are visible everywhere, from drab communist block houses to grand Baroque-style edifices that would be at home on any street in Paris, France, to the imposing Palace of the Parliament, the dictator's former residence and one of the world's largest buildings.

Is Bucharest worth visiting? Absolutely - it was by far THE highlight of my entire time in Romania, and I'd definitely recommend spending some time here. It's cheap, cheerful, pleasant, and (generally) photogenic - its only downside being its relatively isolated location in Europe, an endless drive from most other major centers. But, as you'll find, it's worth the trip...
