A line of thunderstorms quickly developed southwestward along a cold front from western Iowa, through Kanas and into western Oklahoma on the afternoon of April 30, 2024. Thunderstorm tops rose to well above 50,000 feet and the only gap in the line was over north-central Oklahoma. This gap provided enough room for multiple aircraft to sneak through the line and causing a "traffic jam" in the skies.
