Описание к видео Hot! Niger Bans Exportation Of Natural Gas To Punish Nigeria

Niger bans export of natural gas to punish Nigeria. Niger has banned all exports of LPG, its Liquid petroleum gas until further notice. Due to the military coup in Niger which started on the 26th of July 2023. The country has been subject to an economic crisis caused by international and national sanctions.
The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, also opposed the recent coup and imposed sanctions against the newly established authorities in Niamey on July 30. The Leader of the ECOWAS is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president of Nigeria. So it is safe to say that the ban on the exportation of LPG to other countries could be a result of retaliation to sanctions.

However, since the coup, there has been a rise in the need for this gas to be used domestically, which means surpluses could not and will not be exported to other countries.

The country that stands to lose the most from the ban is Nigeria. Niger steadily exported the majority of its LPG to Nigeria. This made Nigeria comfortable as they consume over 1.4 million tons of LPG yearly. 800,000 tons of which is imported into Nigeria. This means, only 600,000 tonnes were produced within the country. LPG or liquefied petroleum gas is basically flammable gas that is mostly used for cooking, residential heating, and vehicles.

Also, the member states of ECOWAS in support of the sanctions, closed their borders to Niger, stopped all financial transactions, and even went to the extent of freezing the assets of Niger in various central banks. Some analysts are for the fact that the ban is not only because of Niger’s recent needs but is also motivated by political and diplomatic factors considering the fact that Nigeria is a member of ECOWAS.

Another reason for this ban could also be because of Nigeria’s power cut from Niger, as Niger is a landlocked country and needs to depend on its neighbors for certain things, and in this case, Nigeria supplies Niger with 70% of its electricity. This dealt a huge blow to Niger as streets were left dark for days due to a shortage of electricity. A way Niger knew it could use to get back at Nigeria for its actions, was to impose a ban on its LPG which it has in abundance to punish Nigeria.
