It's 1.30 pm on Saturday 7th January 1978 and Desmond Lynam presents a special edition of Sport on 2 to mark the 30th birthday of Sports Report.

Des is joined by special guests including David Coleman, Brian Moore, John Arlott, Harry Carpenter, Brian Johnston, Cliff Morgan and Eamonn Andrews to reminisce about the early days of Sports Report and how it has developed since. The broadcast ends with the voice of the first presenter, the late Raymond Glendenning, humming the opening bars of the series' theme tune ‘Out of the Blue', which then takes over and closes the broadcast. While this programme was on air, a telephone message of best wishes to the Sports Report team arrived from Raymond's widow Sheila, which John Arlott read out.

When it was made, this recording had to fit onto a 30-minute cassette tape, so it was heavily edited at the time. The sound quality is variable - Des's voice is fairly clear, but some of the guests' voices appear rather muffled and distant. Although these factors may prevent the fullest enjoyment of the broadcast, there appears to be no other version of the programme available on You Tube.
