On 9 April, Bangladeshi model and actress Meghna Alam was arrested mid-livestream while on Facebook at her home in Dhaka. The shocking video showed armed men, claiming to be police, breaking into her residence and detaining her.

After 24 hours, it was revealed that Meghna had been detained under the controversial Special Powers Act for allegedly threatening Bangladesh’s diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia.

It all started when Meghna made a series of social media posts accusing Saudi Ambassador Issa bin Youssef Al-Duhailan of being romantically involved with her despite being married with children. She further claimed that he was using diplomatic pressure to have the Bangladeshi government silence her.

However, the Bangladeshi police and government have in turn accused Meghna of running a 'honey trap' scam and trying to extort $5 million from the Saudi Ambassador.

Although the investigation is underway, given that there was no arrest warrant and no formal charges, and with mounting criticism from human rights groups and legal experts, many are calling this a misuse of power.
