Today James Cagney would be more remembered by non dancers for his gangster persona, then his very accomplished talents as a hoofer from Vaudeville to Hollywood.

Musicals during the Depression Era such as Footlight Parade gave an escape to the worries of the time and provided much relief of those stresses.

Miss. Keeler spoke about her time as an Actress/Dancer.

“It’s really amazing. I couldn’t act. I had that terrible singing voice, and now I can see I wasn’t the greatest tap dancer in the world, either.”

I would disagree with her assessment; perhaps she was comparing herself to other artists/performers at the time? Obviously some dancers are going to standout more than others; however she was refreshing and entertaining.

Mr. Cagney spoke about working on the film and with Miss. Keeler.

“Never met the lady. No, really. I was never introduced to Ruby Keeler. If that doesn’t show you the impersonality as well as the factory approach to work those days at Warner’s, nothing will. I showed up to rehearse the “Shanghai Lil” number a few times, and we nodded friendly enough, and we had some lines earlier, but it was all work, work, work, and I think we were mutually shy, so we never met. We did the number, and that was it. I saw Ruby at a couple of parties after that, but we were in separate groups, so we just nodded and smiled. As to Footlight Parade, it was one of the few of my movies I’ve ever seen, and I liked it, having seen it just after it was made. Then I saw it years later on television and hated it. Now (1980) I think it’s fun.”
