Susan Wanjiku’s Journey of Struggle and Survival

Susan Wanjiku was born and raised in the ghetto, where life is full of hardship and raising children is a daily battle for many parents. While she was in school, her family often struggled to afford school fees. By the time she reached Class Eight, Susan asked her mother to let her pursue a vocational course instead of continuing with her primary education.

One day, she met a man who impregnated her. He soon began mistreating her, and one day she found him with another woman in their home. Devastated, she returned to her parents’ house. Determined to survive, she borrowed some money and started a small business. By God’s grace, she found customers and began to earn a living.

After giving birth, Susan eventually found a job and saved enough to rent her own house. While working, she met another man and became pregnant again—but he abandoned her. Life became unbearably difficult, and she was forced to beg to survive.

With the little money she managed to gather, she began selling bananas and received occasional tips. She gave birth to her second child and continued hawking with the baby strapped to her back. When the child’s father demanded custody and she refused, he beat her. Susan gave him the child, and he took the baby to the village for two weeks. When he returned the child, he continued to be violent whenever he wanted to see the baby.

Eventually, Susan expressed a desire to go to Saudi Arabia for work. Her father was initially against the idea but later gave his blessing. In Saudi Arabia, she worked for a year without receiving any salary, and her employer confiscated her phone. One day, she decided to escape and found another job, which allowed her to start supporting her family back home.

She worked tirelessly to send money to her loved ones. But while working in another household, she began experiencing strange attacks—feeling choked whenever she tried to pray. Her health deteriorated, and though she visited hospitals, doctors couldn’t diagnose any illness. She spent all her savings trying to get better.

After enduring immense suffering, Susan finally approached the authorities and was deported back to Kenya. She arrived weak and had to undergo treatment again. With no other means to support her family, Susan was forced into selling her body.
