DIY- How to: Remove & Install Thermostat + Coolant Remove + Replace and Throttle Body cleaning on 2.5L 4-cylinder engine 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5

FOR 2.0 (per 'ski e', a viewer):
Its basically the same on the 2.0 L, 2.5 is literally just upscaled version of the 2.0 engine. The only thing that appears different is some hoses and wire routes because of the larger size in the engine bay. Positions on the engine and battery removal are the same

Mazda part number use:
-Thermostat PE01-15-171
-Mazda Coolant, 2 gallons -- FL22 0000-77-508F-20 (you will use about 1.5 gallons)

you can use after market parts for the thermostat, but make sure about the fitment: https://amzn.to/3uIynB9

Are you replacing the water pump or have over 100,000 miles on the car? It might be high time to replace the thermostat.

In the process of getting to the Thermostat, we will be removing the battery & tray, air box…might as well do the following additional things: clean up the battery and battery tray, air box, throttle body and drain & refill the coolant.

This applies to 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which can be found in 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5.

In this video, I’ll show you how to:
-remove and replace the Thermostat
-clean up the battery and the tray,
-clean the air box and
-clean the throttle body and
-drain the coolant from radiator & replace it with new coolant
All parts used are Mazda OEM parts.

When the draining the radiator, most of the coolant is removed except for what is in the engine/block. Since, not all the coolant is removed, we do not want to mix other brand coolant with Mazda coolant, so the system will be refilled with Mazda Coolant. The cost is the same, not worth the $10-$15 saving to risk other engine/gasket problems

In order to drain the coolant from the car, the driver side front end does need to be lifted a bit higher to be able to place a drain pan and access the drain plug on the radiator. For this, you only need to lift the car like 6” or so, and your body (head or shoulder) does not need to go under the car….IF you plan on going under the car, the car should be jacked up, and jack stands placed under the car so that it is safe for you to go under the car.

The following link shows how to jack up the car and position jack stands under the vehicle to supported it safely:
