Meet our hero, Jack Colt (Emilio Estevez). The relative peace is shattered as two would-be robbers burst in, their faces now obscured by the classic nylon pantyhose masks after learning the mini-mart does not have any pantyhose in taupe. "You call this a convenience store?!" the robber retorts, before they officially announce the holdup.

Colt, ever the cop (even when craving a nuked burger), draws his weapon and fires (missing, naturally, in true action-comedy style). He dives for cover, and all hell breaks loose as the robbers return fire with machine guns. Their bullets shred nearby jugs of yellow liquid, each sending streams of the unidentified fluid arcing through the air. Colt, never missing an opportunity, calmly holds out the cup he seemingly had ready and gets a free refreshment refill mid-gunfight.

Director Gene Quintano and his team dive in headfirst. At its core, Loaded Weapon 1 takes aim squarely at Shane Black’s buddy-cop blueprint. As Roger Ebert sagely pointed out, The Lethal Weapon movies may look like prime targets for satire, but consider for a moment: Aren't they already a satire of themselves?". It’s a tricky proposition to spoof something that’s already got its tongue firmly in its cheek.

Upon its release in February 1993, Loaded Weapon 1 found itself in the direct line of fire from critics, many of whom felt it didn't quite hit the bullseye. The esteemed Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded it a mere two stars, opining, "This is a would-be comedy that's not as funny (nor as satirical) as the movies that inspired it. It's hard to satirize a satire".
