SNK Arcade Classics Vol.0 - Retro Games Collection [PSP]

SNK Arcade Classics Vol.0 is a collection of 20 arcade games ported over exclusively to the PSP in Japan.

This is a follow up to the fantastic SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1 for the PS2, PSP & Wii. SNK chose to name the collection Vol.0 instead of Vol.2 as it focuses exclusively on SNK older titles from 1980 - 1989.

There's a varied selection of genres to choose from although it is quite shooter heavy. 12 of the included 20 games can be considered shooters with a couple of platforms and a few sports and puzzle games to balance out the mix.

Psycho Soldier and Athena are standouts in this collection and are excellent games. Sadly, there's no Metal Slug or King of Fighters included this time around and a few of the games are quite primitive.

This collection leans far too heavily on games that use rotation (Ikari Warriors, T.A.N.K., Dogosoken etc) and the solution of using the PSP's L&R buttons takes a big of getting used to and often ended up with my dying a lot in-game.

In terms of emulation, the games run and play great with no perceivable lag. The only technical issue I have with this collection is often the bottom few rows of pixels are missing (as you can see in my footage). I'm guessing this was done to maintain a correct pixel aspect ratio.

There's options for each game to have alternate display modes. Most of the SHMUPs on the collection allow for rotated display with the rest allowing you to stretch the image out to the PSP's native 16:9 and it looks horrible.


Overall, SNK Arcade Classics Vol.0 is a nice collection of some classic games but I would recommend picking up Vol.1 (   • SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1 - Retro Gam...  ) as it has a far better game selection.


All footage was captured on a PSTV running Adrenaline + the sharp scale plugin. The output was integer scaled up to 4k using my RetroTink 4k.
