The 2025 annual intellectual property law public lecture, presented by the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property Law at the Faculty of Law, Stellenbosch University on 23 October 2025.

The format for the public lecture was a little different this year. Instead of a single keynote, we hosted two expert speakers, Mohamed Kader, partner at Spoor & Fisher, and Wensel Britz, partner at Von Seidels, who offered complementary perspectives on the legal, economic, and social dimensions of counterfeit goods in South Africa and on the continent.

Their presentations were followed by a lively panel discussion featuring industry practitioners who deal with counterfeit goods on the ground. The panellists were Joanne Clarke, business director of an FMCG business, Brigadier Kobus Lategan, the national head of the SAP Service's National Counterfeit, Contraband and Illicit Goods Unit, Sergio Fragoso Rodriguez, head of asset and brand protection at Moët Hennessy, Braam Schoeman, brand protection manager at SC Johnson & Son, and Joe van der Walt, CEO of Focus Group.
