In recent years, the conservative supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court has profoundly altered the civil rights landscape. The Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, ended affirmative action in higher education, and found that “expressive” businesses have a free speech right to refuse service to same-sex couples and other members of protected classes.

The Legal Defense Fund (LDF) is the nation’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. It has won major victories even in today’s daunting legal environment, such as the recent Supreme Court decision in Allen v. Milligan upholding a core plank of the Voting Rights Act.

Janai Nelson, President and Director-Counsel of LDF, was joined by Professor Kenji Yoshino, Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law and Director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. They explored questions such as: How have the recent supreme court decisions affected our civil rights? What challenges lie ahead in the upcoming term? And what can individuals who believe in diversity, inclusion and belonging do to advance those values at a significant legal backsliding?

This event was part of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging speaker series and was cosponsored by the Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Center and the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law.
