Hair transplants is a right solution for individuals dealing with baldness or androgenetic alopecia. If you've undergone a follicular unit transplant (FUT) or a follicular unit extraction (FUE), a very common question asked is how safe to dye your hair after the procedure.
In this video, our Hair Transplant surgeon Dr Rahul Jagiasi has explained when you can colour / dye your hair after the transplant procedure and what precautions to be taken while applying colour to the transplanted area to ensure the best results and the safety of your transplanted hair.

Timing
The first and most critical consideration is timing. You should wait at least six to eight weeks after your transplant procedure to allow the grafts to establish themselves,attach themselves and let the scalp to heal.

Consult Your Surgeon
Before reaching for that hair dye, consult your hair transplant surgeon. They will provide specific guidance based on your individual case and the type of transplant you had. Your surgeon's advice is very valuable for understanding when it's safe to dye your hair and any specific recommendations they may have.

Choose the Right Hair Colour
Selecting the appropriate hair colour/dye is essential. Opt for a mild, ammonia-free hair dye. Harsh chemicals and ammonia can potentially irritate and harm the transplanted area and the healing scalp. Look for dyes that are specifically formulated ,are ammonia free, as they are less likely to cause irritation or damage.

Do a Patch Test
Before applying the dye to your entire scalp, conduct a patch test. Apply a small amount of dye to a discreet area of your scalp and check for any allergic reactions or adverse effects. This step is crucial, as it helps you avoid unwanted side effects.

Gentle Application
When applying the dye, be gentle with your scalp. Avoid any vigorous rubbing or pulling. It's essential to treat your scalp with care to prevent trauma to the newly transplanted hair.

Avoid Chemical Exposure
Avoid hair colours/dye which has harsh chemicals like peroxide or bleach.These are harsh chemicals and like ammonia they can irritate the scalp.
