The Minolta CLE is a bit of an odd duck among Leica M mount rangefinders. It was Minolta’s only solo try at an M-mount camera and came out after the discontinuation of the Leica CL, which Minolta helped design. The CLE pushed the M mount even further by making the camera smaller and incorporating more electronic features. The CLE even had aperture priority auto exposure when it was released in 1980, making it the first M-mount camera to have this feature.

In some ways, it’s the most capable M-mount film camera out there. Comparable cameras from other manufacturers, like the Konica Hexar RF (1999), Zeiss Ikon ZM (2005), and Leica M7 (2002), didn’t come out for decades after it.

So here’s a shout-out for the Minolta CLE! If you want an M-mount rangefinder that fits in your jacket pocket and has auto exposure, this might be the best choice!
