Lille (2024, also known in Dutch as Rijssel) is a city in the North of France in the region of Hauts-de-France, Nord. The city has a population of 240,000 and is located close to the border of Belgium. The metropolitan area of Lille has a population of 2,1 million. The city has an old history and was founded around 2,000 BC. The city was for a very long period controlled by Flanders and in majority Dutch speaking. In 1667 Louis XIV of France laid siege to Lille, resulting in it becoming French in 1668. Some highlights of the city are the historical city centre with the Grand Place and the Vieille Bourse, the Art Deco City Hall, the Theatre Square, the Belfry of the Chamber of Commerce, the Euralille Area and the citadel of Lille.
