Woodturning Stunning Elm Burl becomes Bud Vase

Описание к видео Woodturning Stunning Elm Burl becomes Bud Vase

In this video i mill an 80mmx80mmx220mm spindle blank from a seasoned Elm Burl and turn it into a Bud Vase.

I begin by milling the burl on the bandsaw to square a piece for the lathe. Once the piece is mounted on the lathe and brought to round I turn a tenon on one end to mount the piece in my chuck so I can bore a 20mm hole down what will be the neck of the vase. With the hole bored I'm then able to start removing waste material.

As I begin turning I discover that there are some severe cracks through the piece where it has moved while drying. I stabilise the cracks in the neck with epoxy and saw dust to prevent it breaking apart and continue turning. When I have the desired shape i decide to leave the other cracks as a natural feature of the vase.

I sand from 150 through to 600 and apply oil before applying sanding sealer and finishing with friction polish.

The end result is a beautiful Bud Vase and the figuring in the grain of the Elm Burl is exquisite. The cracks also add character to the piece.
Flower arrangement credited to my gorgeous wife.
