Описание к видео Growing a winter hardy citrus rootstock to see if it is a Calamondin orange or a Volkamer Lemon.

I acquired a grafted Nagami Kumquat (Fortunella Margarita) from Aldi in February 2022, but sadly, the Nagami scion succumbed to the harsh winter of 2022, leaving behind the rootstock stump. Determining the specific rootstock of citrus plants available at UK supermarkets and DIY stores has proven challenging. Typically, both calamondins and kumquats are cultivated on trifoliate orange rootstocks. However, it's noteworthy that Calamondin is also commonly used as a rootstock for 'Nagami' kumquat (Hodgson, 1967) in Europe. Contrary reports have suggested that Kumquats struggle and may perish swiftly when grafted onto sour orange rootstocks. In the wake of the 2022 winter freeze, the Nagami rootstock exhibited resilience by sprouting new branches. The main branch has now reached an impressive height of over 85cm. Notably, the shape and characteristics of the leaves differ from those of a trifoliata rootstock, resembling more closely the leaves of my Calamondin orange plant growing in a container in my garden. Intrigued by this unexpected turn of events, I am committed to nurturing this rootstock in my garden to observe how it fares through subsequent winters without protective covering. I am eagerly anticipating the potential development of flowers and fruits, eager to see how this experiment unfolds. The Volkamer Lemon (Citrus volkameriana) which is (a cross between a lemon and the bitter orange) with a similar leaf shape to the Calamondin orange and cold tolerant to -12C is also used as a rootstock in southern Italy. The main flowering period of the Volkamer Lemon is from October to April. The flowers are said to be white on the inside, tinged with purple on the outside and they smell fantastic. I would be quite pleased if it turned out that I have another Calamondin orange or Volkamer Lemon addition to my citrus collection.
