This is the first act of the private recording of Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe, made during the Camden Festival in 1973. This was issued on what was essentially a bootleg 3LP set shortly after. The performance certainly isn’t up to the standards of the Opera Rara studio recording from the end of the same decade (which comes highly recommended), but it gives an interesting insight into how the opera had been cut through the years. This first act, for example, is missing the second verse of the Togetherness song, the With a Kiss ensemble, the entirety of the prayer, and various other short sections that had got excised. By the time of the studio recording, the autograph score had been consulted and virtually all of this music was back in its rightful place. This audio comes from a clean copy of the bootleg LPs.
