My name is Steven Gabel, and I am the owner and Medical Director at the Gabel Hair Restoration Center in Portland, Oregon. I have been practicing hair restoration for approximately 12 years, and in that time, I have developed a practice which treats the whole patient for hair restoration. Low light laser therapy has been around for years, for the treatment of several different things in the body, and basically, it was used as a healing mechanism. It was introduced into the hair restoration market several years ago, and of course in the beginning I was very skeptical. Over the past few years, reading the scientific articles, I’ve seen patients who have been treated with low light laser therapy, and also going to meetings and seeing the advances of low light laser therapy, I have incorporated it into my practice.
Low light laser therapy is a cold laser. The way it works for hair restoration is it emits a light [that measures] around 650 nanometers, which gets absorbed into the scalp, and has properties where it helps enhance the hair. It will thicken the hair, and help restore the hair.
Overall, low light laser therapy is beneficial for every patient. I feel low light laser therapy can be a great treatment option for women who have diffuse hair loss. Many women with diffuse hair loss are not quite surgical candidates because they just don’t have enough hair. But with the addition of low light laser therapy, I see many women just have tremendous, outstanding results that they are happy with.
For low light laser therapy, I feel compliance is really related to how easy it is for patients to use the device. And with the portable devices, such as the Capillus, patients are able to use this device on their own time. They are able to schedule it at their convenience, and use it when it is best suited for them.
And basically, what a patient will do is, with the different model, you will use it approximately 30 minutes, every other day, for at least 3 times a week at your convenience. And some people will sit there at their computer while they are working and making phone calls, I have other patients that will be driving while they have the Capillus on, because they really don’t realize it’s on there after a while.
There are all sorts of devices out there for low light laser therapy, and I feel Capillus is one of the better units because it has so many individual lasers. And what the studies have shown, is that you have to have a certain amount of energy delivered to the scalp from the lasers in order to be effective. And since the Capillus unit has over 270 individual lasers, it’s able to deliver that amount of energy to all the areas of the scalp that have hair, which eventually translates into a thicker result [head of hair].
I recommend low light laser therapy—specifically the Capillus system—because it is very easy to use, it’s safe for patients, and it has been shown to be effective for the treatment of hair loss. Many patients that we have treated have been very happy with the results of using this system.
