“On Monday, Hasina fled to India after weeks of protests led by students against a quota system for government jobs turned into a full-scale rebellion against her and her government. Hasina cracked down hard, deploying security forces, shutting off the internet and enforcing a nationwide curfew with a shoot-on-sight order. This only inflamed the situation, sparking more violence. More than 300 people have been killed in clashes since mid-July, when the protests turned deadly.”

“The country was plunged into more chaos and uncertainty after she fled. The police, whose members were also killed, went on strike, prompting students in Dhaka to man the streets. In the past week though, there’s been some progress, the Parliament was dissolved and a new interim government, headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was put in place. In the cabinet are also two student leaders who spearheaded the protests, and they have vowed to make sure that the voices of young Bangladeshis are heard."
