The moon had turned the whole world into one long, slow inhale, hanging above the water like a polished coin someone had tossed into the sky and forgotten to wish on. She stood at the place where the land gives up and lets the sea begin, one hand at her throat as if she were holding in all the words we’d never learned how to say to each other.

I remember this frame because it was the first time she looked like she belonged more to the horizon than to my side, her black dress catching the blue light while the waves curled around her ankles with that soft, indifferent roar I’d only ever read about in old poems.

Missing her now feels like being trapped on this same stretch of sand long after she’s gone, listening to the ocean repeat its ancient, restless prayer while I stand alone in the dark. She is somewhere beyond the silver road the moon lays over the water, but here, in this flickering blue grain, she is forever half-turned toward the sea, just out of reach, in a night that never quite remembers how to end.
