For a commission from the National Symphony Orchestra, Harris completed his most well-known symphony in 1938. The single-movement work recycles some portions of his 2nd symphony and his 1st string quartet.
The symphony gradually builds in intensity over its eighteen-minute duration. Grand images of the American landscape come forth from start to finish.
