How to make your character art more vibrant

I see many artists make the mistake of only lightening or darkening their base color when choosing colors for their original character art. While this technique is easy to do, the results come across as kind of flat.

To make your character art more vibrant, shift your hues when you color pick. For example, if your base color is orange, hue shift to the yellows for the highlights and to the reds for the shadows.

The reason this works is because high saturated yellow is lighter than orange and high saturated red is darker than orange.

Now if we paint back over our colors using the reddish orange, our colors start to look a lot more vibrant.

Let's take a look at another example. This character has seafoam colored hair. We could just use light seafoam and dark seafoam. But instead I'm choosing to use a more bluish green for the shadows and a yellowish green for the highlights.

Here's what it looks like before and after. And don't forget to add a background because it really makes the colors pop.
