During the CBP Structured Interview, your facial expressions communicate more than your words. Every subtle movement—jaw tension, blinking, micro-smiles, or darting eyes—tells the panel if you’re confident or uncertain. Confidence isn’t about smiling constantly; it’s about composure, self-control, and the ability to stay neutral under scrutiny. Agents are trained to read cues, so when your face leaks stress, it signals hesitation or lack of readiness. The key is mastering your neutral baseline—soft jaw, relaxed brow, lips resting naturally, and steady eye contact that cycles between the panel members.
Before the interview starts, take two deep 4-4-6 breaths (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 6). This slows your heart rate and resets your facial tension. As you answer, imagine you’re giving a briefing, not defending yourself. Speak in clear, short sentences and maintain the “gaze triangle”: left interviewer → right interviewer → center. This small technique projects balance and awareness. Avoid nervous habits like over-smiling, biting your lips, or looking down after every response—they drain authority.
When coaching CBP applicants, I teach them that facial discipline equals command presence. If you want the panel to trust your judgment, your face must show calm control. Combine that with STAR-structured answers—Situation, Task, Action, Result—and you’ll deliver the confidence, professionalism, and composure they’re scoring.
