In the Kathmandu valley, the tradition of the living goddess, or Kumari, is alive and well, even today, although Nepal is a fully functioning republic and has been one for 16 years since the monarchy was fully abolished. The Kumari is selected from the Sakya clan at a very young age and receives devotees a few times a week. Even the president, Bidya Devi Bhandari prays to her twice a year, although she once belonged to the Unified Marxist-Leninist party led by former Nepali prime minister K P Oli. Mr Oli is very much fighting the election. ThePrint's Senior Consulting Editor Jyoti Malhotra visited the Kumari temple in the Basantapur complex in Kathmandu, met the Kumari in her quarters and spoke to both devotees and a senior woman Nepali journalist on the place of the Kumari tradition as all of Nepal participates in another secular event -- elections.
