With campuses spread throughout Lee County, sometimes patients need to be moved for the right care. “Within the Lee Health system, there are multiple campuses we have and there are specialized service lines at each campus,” said Thomas Lawrence, the Manager for Lee Health’s Transfer Center.

Since moving around can be difficult, there’s an entire department called the transfer center to help ensure a smooth relocation. “We help facilitate any transfers for patients being transferred into the Lee Health system, out of the Lee Health system, to other acute care facilities, skilled nursing units, or within our own health system,” said Lawrence.

If the patient needs an ambulance, a nurse will be able to accompany them on their journey. “Our critical patients need a nurse to travel with them, they need extra hands, they need trips that are titrated, so we are all able to get on the ambulance with the paramedic and EMT and travel with that patient to make sure it’s a safe transfer from point a to point B,” said Transfer Center Critical Care Transport RN Angela Townsend.

Since they’re moving between hospitals, that means the patient may need a new doctor. “My biggest priority is to make sure a patient will have a doctor when they arrive. Whether it be through an ED admission, or the patient comes through a different facility, they’re always going to have a doctor,” said Hospitalist Access Specialist Kathryn Diaz.
