Вулиця розташована в центральній та привокзальній частинах міста. Починається з Соборного майдану і закінчується на Привокзальному майдані, проходить через майдан Згоди. Забудова на початку вулиці формувалась упродовж другої половини XVIII ст. — середини XIX ст.; на ділянці від вул. Московської до Привокзального майдану — у другій пол. ХІХ ст. Сучасна забудова сформувалася у 1960-70-х роках.

Buildings at the beginning of the street were formed during the second half of the XVIII century. - the middle of the XIX century; in the area from the street. Moscow to the Railway Station Square - in the second floor. XIX century. Modern buildings were formed in the 1960-70s.

Виникла у XVII ст. зі шляху, що вів з Житомирського замку через Вереси, Гадзинку, Студеницю на місто Радомишль і далі на Київ. У XVIII мала назву Великий шлях на Вереси. Зустрічається також назва Дорога на село Вацьків (нині Глибочиця Житомирського району). Названий шлях приблизно відповідав сучасній трасі Київської вулиці на ділянці від Соборного майдану і до майдану Згоди, хоча тоді він робив незначні повороти, обходячи природні перепони (болітця, невеликі озера, пагорби тощо). Два з цих найбільш суттєвих поворотів вулиці зафіксовані також у її сучасній топографії.

It originated in the XVII century. from the road leading from Zhytomyr Castle through Veresy, Hadzynka, Studenytsia to the city of Radomyshl and further to Kyiv. In the XVIII century it was called the Great Way to Veresy. There is also the name Road to the village of Vatskiv (now Hlybochytsia, Zhytomyr district). This route roughly corresponded to the modern route of Kyivska Street in the area from Soborny Maidan to Zhoda Square, although at that time it made minor turns, bypassing natural obstacles (swamps, small lakes, hills, etc.). Two of these most significant turns of the street are also recorded in its modern topography.

До початку XIX ст. вулиця мала назву Великий Вересівський Шлях, у 1800 році - відома під назвою Велика дорога на Радомишль, з початку XIX ст. до 1924 року – Київська (у середині XIX ст. на планах міста зустрічається назва Велика Київська вулиця). З 1920 по 1941 рік та з 1944 по 1991 рік — вул. Леніна.

У 1942-1943 роках, у період тимчасової німецько-фашистської окупації, мала назву вул. Рейхенау (Reichenaustrasse) – за прізвищем генерал-фельдмаршала Вермахту Вальтера Рейхенау. З 1991 року рішенням сесії міської ради вулиці було повернуто її історичну назву Київська вулиця.

By the beginning of the XIX century. the street was called Velykyi Veresivskyi Shliakh, in 1800 it was known as Velyka Doroha na Radomyshl, from the beginning of the 19th century until 1924 - Kyivska (in the middle of the XIX century the city's name was called Velyka Kyivska Street). From 1920 to 1941 and from 1944 to 1991 - st. Lenin.

In 1942-1943, during the temporary Nazi occupation, it was called st. Reichenaustrasse (Reichenaustrasse) - named after Wehrmacht Field Marshal Walter Reichenau. Since 1991, the decision of the session of the city council of the street was returned to its historical name Kyivska Street.
