This is the main entrance door from Brisbane House, Largs, Scotland, the home of the Late Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane. it was presented to the city in 1958 by the Provost of Largs

Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane was born on 23 July 1773 at Brisbane house, Largs, Scotland, the son of a family of ancient Scottish lineage. Sir Thomas Brisbane first arrived in Australia in 1821 where he held the role as the sixth governor of NSW from 1821 to 1825.

During his time as Governor, Sir Thomas Brisbane and Lieutenant John Oxley north it fin a suitable site to house convicts who ha committed further crimes in Australia. During this trip, Lieutenant Oxley discovered an named the Brisbane River. A convict settlement was established in 1825 and free settlement began in 1842.

Sir Thomas Brisbane returned to Scotland in 1825 where he furthered his interests in astronomy and science an helped further develop the city of Largs. Sir Thomas Brisbane lived be the oldest officer of the British army before he died in Brisbane house in 1860.

This oak door which is referred to as the 'Largs door' came from the main entrance to Brisbane house. The original manor is believe to have been built between 1245 & 1400, with the last occupant being Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane's great-niece. Florence St Aubyn, who adopted the name Miss Brisbane. Following her death in 1932 the house become derelict. The estate was later used for military training exercises by British commandoes & the door was salvaged before Brisbane house was destroyed in 1939. It was presented to Brisbane City Council by the Provost of Largs in 1958
