Communities across Maine are working to address flooding, storm damage, impacts to aging infrastructure, and other climate-related risks—but identifying the right funding source and understanding eligibility can be a challenge.

This workshop provides an overview of the Maine Infrastructure Adaptation Fund (MIAF), administered by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT). Presenters Sierra Millay and Lirella Jaen review the program’s purpose, eligible applicants, eligible project types, funding ranges, match requirements, and timeline for the next Request for Applications (RFA) expected in March 2026.

Participants learn how MIAF can support adaptation of publicly owned critical infrastructure to reduce vulnerability to climate impacts such as flooding, sea level rise, and extreme precipitation. The session highlights examples from prior funding rounds, clarifies key eligibility rules (including that state-owned/state-aid and private infrastructure are not eligible), and discusses how nature-based solutions (NbS) and hybrid green/gray approaches may be incorporated where applicable.
The workshop concludes with an extended Q&A focused on match and in-kind contributions, environmental compliance review, coordination across entities, land purchase questions, and eligibility considerations for common project types such as stream crossings, shoreline stabilization, and road resilience projects.

This session is part of the From Ideas to Action Series, hosted by the Southern & Midcoast Resilience Coordinator Collaborative (SMRCC)– a partnership of Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC), Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG), Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission (LCRPC), and Midcoast Council of Governments (MCOG).
